Student success statement 2/20

Student Success Statement
“If you do what’s right, you have no need to fear”
                 -ANON
Reflection: this is true because when you know you are doing something wrong, you start acting differently. You start acting suspicious. You start to panic or you just freak out acting out of plain fear. For example, you stole from a store. Your mom later questions the fact that you have 20 packs of gum hidden in your room. The natural instinct of the man is to flee, or run from the situation because deep in your mind you know you’re going to get caught. So you make up a stupid lie and you get caught. To summarize, you fear when you know you did wrong so just do what you know is good and it won’t get you into unnecessary trouble.

Habit 7
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Teen should never get too busy living and taking time to renew them. When teens “sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self “sharp” so that they can better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life- body, mind, heart, and soul.
1. Body. Eat wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Exercise regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at night. Get to bed early at night and get up early each morning. “early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
2. Mind. Think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze. Seek to read a good book. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop you mind through positive “self-talk.”

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 6
Habit 6: synergize
Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy allows teens to value differences and better appreciate others. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form a V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: Learn to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of a synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the sax, or the vocalist, it’s all of them together that make up the “sound”. Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. No instrument is more important than another, just different.

Student Success Statement 2/14

Student Success Statement
“So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in-group,” we lose sight of things that are far more important”
              -Sean Covey
Reflection: this happens very commonly now in days. Everyone wants to be noticed, everyone wants to be recognized. And those people are willing to risk good friendships, family love, and themselves. Most of the time the “populars” are not very good people so once you start socializing with them you will not be the person you used to be. I think that risking all the good things in my life for some “peers” is not worth it.

7 Habits of a Highly Successful Teen Habit 4

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

Habits 4
4. Think Win-Win.
Teens can learn to foster the belief that it is possible to create an atmosphere of Win-Win in every relationship. This habit encourages the idea that in any given discussion or situation both parties can arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. Your teen will learn to celebrate the accomplishment of others instead of being threatened by them. Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win. It’s both nice and tough all at once. I won’t step on you, but I won’t be your doormat either. You care about other people and you want them to succeed. But you also care about yourself, and you want to succeed as well. Win-Win is abundant. It Is the belief that there’s plenty of success to go around. It’s not either you or me. It’s both of us. It’s not a matter of who gets the biggest piece of the pie. There’s more than enough food for everyone. It’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. Win-win always creates more. Perhaps the most surprising benefit of thinking Win-win is the good feeling it brings on. The true test of the alternative is how you feel. Win-lose and lose-win thinking will cloud you judgment and fill you with negative feelings. Win-Win will fill your heart with happy and serene thoughts. It will give you confidence. Even fill you with light. Think Win-Win or no deal.

Student Success Statement 2/13

Student Success Statement: “You cannot do wrong and feel right. It is impossible.”
   -Ezra Taft Benson

Reflection: well, this actually depends on the person and what they did. Like vengeance. Some people have the heart and the conscious to take on the worst things for payback. They have this state of mind in which they don’t give a damn about anything, only themselves. Of course, in some situations they may take a little over the top and start a fire with people inside or murder but like I said it depends on the person. It depends on the situation.

7 habits of a highly successful teen habit 3

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 3
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit three is about Will and Will Not power. The habit helps teens prioritize and manage their times so that they focus and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means learning to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. It’s life according to what matters most. Putting first things first deals with things that are:
Important or not important, urgent or not urgent. Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management.
Quadrant 1: things that are Important and  Urgent
Quadrant 2: things that are Important bur not Urgent
Quadrant 3: things that is not Important but Urgent
Quadrant 4: things that is not Important and not Urgent
1.  Important and Urgent
2. Important but not Urgent
3. Not Important but Urgent
4. Not Important and Not Urgent

Quadrant 2 is the ideal place to spend our time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s what priorities come into play. The results for living Quadrant 2 are:
1. Control of your life
2. Balance
3. High performance

So, in what quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to shift as much time as possible into Quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by planning. Spend more time planning and incorporating the most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach it.

Student Success Statement: "whether i fail or succeed shall be no man's doing but my own. I am the force".

                  -Elaine Maxwell

REFLECTION: you shouldn't do what other people tell you because if you do, you may end up in trouble and it wasn't even what you wanted for yourself. It also kind of relates to cheating because you may copy someone else's paper but you don't know if the person knows what he/she is doing. It wasn't your acts and know you have to pay the price like if it was.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 1
Habit 1: Be Proactive.
Being proactive is the key to unlocking the other habits. Help your teen take control and responsibility for her life. Proactive people understand that they are responsible for their own happiness or unhappiness. They don’t blame others for their own actions or feelings. Proactive people realize that the ball is in their court, that they are the captain of their own ship; that they are in control, control of their decisions, thoughts, choices, decisions, goals, actions and priorities. Proactive people are self-starters; they don’t wait to be told what to do, they press forward with enthusiasm toward the achievement of their decision. Obey the rules. Obey the law. Obey the coach. Obey the school policies. Obey your parents. Obey the exactness, and great things will come to you. Be proactive and take the initiative.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
By Sean Convey
For teens, life is not a playground, it’s a jungle. And, being the parent of a teenager isn’t any walk in the park, either. In his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teen, author Sean Convey attempts to provide “a compass to help teens and their parents navigate problems they encounter daily.”
How will they deal with peer pressure? Motivation? Success or lack there of? The life of a teenager is full of tough issues and life-changing decisions. As a parent, you are responsible to help them learn the responsible to help them learn their principles and ethics that will help them and reach their goals and live a successful.
While it’s all well and good to tell kids how to live their lives, “teens watch what you do more than they listen to what you say,” Covey says. So practice what you preach. Your example can be very influential.
Covey himself has done well by following a parent’s example. His dad, Stephen Covey, wrote the book The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, which sold over 15 million copies. Sean’s chip off the old block, and no slacker. His own book has rung in a more than respectable 2 million copies sold. Here are his seven habits, and some ideas in helping your teen understand and apply them.

You don’t have computer expert to be successful in online learning but you must have access to personal computer with reliable internet access as well as a basic level of competency in using them. Owning a computer with internet access from your home is ideal but many students use the computer labs on campus or at their offices to complete their work.
…has basic computer skills and is willing and open to learning new ones
We said you don’t have to be a computer expert to be successful in online learning. However there are some basics technical skills you should have mastered prior to enrolling in an online course.

Work Together. There are a number of ways that you can ensure you get the most out of your educational. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional and educational experience. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is created in a course environment- sometimes even better than in a face-to-face class. And the same goes for your instructor. Be sure to contact your professor-especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed.

A successful student…
takes responsibility for his/her own learning
Online learning can be a powerful, stimulating, engaging experience for the student who can work and think independently. However, since most-if not all-of the learning takes place in your own time, you will not have the kind of direct supervision you would in a classroom. Online learning therefore requires a significant commitment from you. All education comes down to what you’re willing to invest in your experience-this is particularly true in the online environment. Commitment, self-discipline and self-motivation are all key qualities to ensuring success in an online course!
is comfortable and confident with written communication
Reading and writing are the basis of most online courses, so it’s critical that you feel comfortable with this form of communication. While some courses contain modules that include video or other activities, all of them require significant amounts of reading. And nearly all of your communication with your classmates and your instructor will be in writing. If these are weak areas for you, you will want to address those issues prior to enrolling or while enrolled in an online course. The PSU Writing Center is available to assist you.

Successful Students #10

Successful Students
10
10. Successful students are good time managers. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life.
An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it! It’s your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for their college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non-students! Procrastinators are good excuse-makers. Don’t make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop procrastinating. And don’t wait until tomorrow to do it!

The ten items listed above are a paraphrased from an article by Larry M Ludewig called Ten Commandments for Effective Study Skills which appeared in The Teaching Professor, December, 1992 *Learning technologies and Online Education                                                                                              CHOOSE THE RIGHT!!

Reflection: i think that he is trying to convince you to make your peers realize that the bad things they do (that are considered cool) are really stupid. he is trying to convince you to make them realize that they are just plain dumb for doing stupid stuff. they are not popular. it also tries to influence you to try to make good choices popular. try to bring back the "safe fun"." Successful students #9

Successful students

9. Don’t cram for exams. Successful students know how to divide of study are more effective and they practice it.
If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distribution study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You’ll learn more, remember more, earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions on Friday’s exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful, inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?
When you cram, you are taking the shortcut, and shortcuts never produce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you take shortcuts, you feel rather rotten knowing that you could've done better, but didn't  Shortcuts cut you short. You can’t plant watermelon seed and harvest fresh watermelons the next day. It takes time. Cramming for a test or project and expecting to make a high score the next day is like planting watermelon seeds and expecting to harvest and eat a fresh watermelon the next day. Plus cramming for a test or project doesn't help you academically, so why even do it. Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for an upcoming accountability opportunities.

Reflection 1/29

REFLECTION:

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION; PLEASURE OR PAIN

High school graduation is supposed to be a nice memorable moment. You just got out of the most difficult faze in your life and survived. Its kind of a celebration for all the hard times you had to pass just to get out of there. High school is really difficult for everyone, either because they are not smart enough or their socially inactive. I think a high school graduation brings pleasure because you finally get away from all the drama, you get away from those memories you are trying to erase. You get away from all these people and you can do whatever you want with your life. You are now a adult so you can run away without someone stopping you. But just like it brings pleasure, it brings pain. You can lose contact with your close friends, the ones who have been with you through thick and thin. You are not a child anymore so whatever choices you do will affect you completely. Its all difficult but everyone has to go through this so we, students, just have to stick up with this and grow up.

successful students 5-6

Successful Students

5. Don’t sit in the back of the room. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning.
Students want the best seat available for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professor’s teammate (see no. 4) why do they expose themselves to the temptation of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of all people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity; both are which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then, are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons; is there something else you should be doing with your time?
6. Take good notes. Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.
Why put something into your notes that you don’t understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make the notes meaningful at some time later. A short review of your notes while the material I still fresh in your mind helps you learn more. The more you learn then, the less you’ll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you won’t have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them, and use them often. The more you use them, the more you improve.

3. Ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answers now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It’s your choice.
4. Learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.
Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not your enemy, and you share the same interests, the same goals- in short, and your teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

Successful Student Part 1-2

Successful Student
1-2
Successful students exhibit a combination or successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students…
1. Are responsible and active. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibility means control. It’s the difference between leading and being led. Your own efforts control your grade, you can earn the glory or deserve the blame, or you make the choice. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or, you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting. The choice is yours.

2. Have educational goals. Successful students have legitimate goals and are motivated by what they represent in terms of career aspirations.

Ask yourself these questions: what am I doing here? Why have I chosen to be sitting here now? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me? Answers to these questions represent your “Hot Buttons” and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If you’re educational goals are truly yours, not someone else’s, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you aren't and don’t, everything can, and will.

Study for Multiple Exams Part 2

Study for Multiple Exams

Part 2

My strategies for written assignments: Everyone has their own written styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about writing. I always print out the paper and come back to it in the next day and reread it. That is the easiest way for me to catch my own mistakes. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and If I just wrote it I think it looks perfect, but if I look at it a day later I almost find grammational errors or phrases and sentences I just reword.

How I succeed in team projects: never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work to you or the group their word for it.

Study for Multiple Mistakes

Study for Multiple Exams

Part 1

How I study for multiple exams deal and multiple projects really time management is the most important tool. If I have a test I see if I have multiple things due or to study for all at the same time I spread out my time before hand. For example, if I have a test on and 2 tests on Tuesday then I will study for my Monday test, and then the 2 tests on the second half of Friday and part of Saturday, then my second Tuesday test on Saturday as well as part of Sunday. Then Saturday night I can review for my Monday test because I already studied for it. When the tests are over I can begin reviewing for the other tests. My overall study method: I try to break it up over several days or at least two. I get bogged down if I try to pull an all-nighter. How Iv’e overcome an initial bad grade: if I receive a low grade I probably knew it was coming because I didn’t properly prepare or I didn’t use the right study habit for that class. I usually try to go over what I did wrong and sometimes discuss with the teacher what I can do differently on the next exam or what they suggest I do for studying for the next exam.

Work together Part 1

Work Together

Part 1

I can and will work as a part of the team as long as everyone is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like; here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. It ended up being just fewer than 12 pages, but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really happy and proud of myself.
